Optima Prime: The 2011 Kia Optima Breaks Cover in New York

With the recent introduction of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata—including hybrid and turbo models—it was no surprise to discover that that automaker’s corporate sibling, Kia, would also bring out a three-pronged approach to the mid-size sedan segment. But what may be surprising about the new Kia Optima lineup, which was unveiled at the 2010 New York auto show, is just how different it looks from the Hyundai trio.

The 2011 Optima wears the same crisp design language introduced on the Kia Forte and Kia Sorento, but in its best application yet. The result is a sleek, angular sedan with a high beltline and coupe-like greenhouse, an aggressive stance, and a profile that’s reminiscent of the new Saab 9-5. All in all, it’s a much more sophisticated appearance than shown on the Sonata, especially when viewed from the front.

Compared to the Hyundai, with its overdone, “look at me” grille, the Optima’s face is more confident and athletic, while also being better integrated with the rest of the vehicle’s sheet metal.

Hickory Kia Dealers pointed out that on the inside, the Kia is more driver-oriented than its Hyundai counterpart, with a cockpit-style instrument panel, short-throw gearshift and seats designed to provide extra support. The Optima also boasts the Uvo infotaintment system, which, like Ford’s Sync, relies extensively on voice commands for a safer take on in-car electronics. Speaking of which, there’s also a full complement of tech goodies available, including a navigation system, a 500-watt, eight-speaker audio kit with USB ports and satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Of course, the Optima does share some important components with the Sonata, starting with its powertrain choices. These include a standard 2.4-liter gas-injected engine that makes about 200 horses, a 2.0-liter turbo-four with a twin-scroll turbocharger that ups the ante to 274 hp, and a full-parallel hybrid-drive system that, in the Hyundai, is estimated to return 37 mpg city/39 mpg highway.

While Hyundai and Kia both are moving slowly up market, a Lexus dealer Washington DC and other dealers of established premium brands aren’t too concerned. Both automakers are building better cars and crossovers than ever, but there’s still plenty of brand-building ahead.

Drivers can expect the Optima and Optima turbo to go on sale later this year, while the Optima hybrid is currently scheduled for an early 2011 release.

Oh, and there is one other thing the Optima and Sonata are likely to share: plenty of success among U.S. consumers.
