Kia, and Kia’s parent Hyundai for that matter, has been falling behind when it comes to hybrid technology. However, both Korean brands remain committed to technology and fuel-efficiency, and are ramping up their efforts to produce several new models with hybrid powertrains.
The first of the new Kia hybrids appears to be the next generation Kia Optima. Kia’s midsized sedan has been revamped and is set to make its debut at the 2010 New York Auto Show. Sources at Kia have already confirmed that the Optima will offer a hybrid as well when it enters production later this year. Sales of the new Kia Optima are expected to begin in the fall, with hybrid sales beginning in early 2011.
Both the hybrid and gasoline-powered models will be on display at the Kia Optima’s official launch. The new sedan is expected to be longer and wider than the current generation, and will also offer improved interior space and cargo volume.
The hybrid market is hotter than ever, and many automakers are bolstering their offerings. Nissan Framingham for example says that Nissan is developing an all-new hybrid system for the next Altima sedan. Hybrids will soon fill all levels of the auto market, as Infiniti will also be adding a dedicated hybrid soon according to Hanover Infiniti dealers.
Naturally, Toyota dealerships Massachusetts believe that Toyota’s lineup of hybrid models will continue to hold on to the bulk of the market share. However, with new offerings from Kia and Hyundai, that may be easier said than done.
